What the procedure involves
Total hip replacement removes the damaged femoral head and reshapes the socket, replacing both with an implant. It is used for advanced osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, inflammatory arthritis and some fractures. Avascular necrosis in younger patients is a particularly common reason for travel from Africa and the Gulf, often related to sickle cell disease or long-term steroid use.
Cost in India is driven mainly by the bearing surface. A metal-on-polyethylene bearing sits at the lower end, while ceramic-on-ceramic and ceramic-on-highly-cross-linked-polyethylene bearings cost more and are usually recommended for younger patients because of lower wear rates.
