What the procedure involves
Valve replacement is performed for severe stenosis or regurgitation of the aortic or mitral valve, most often from rheumatic heart disease in patients travelling from Africa and South Asia, and from degenerative calcification in older patients. Repair is preferred to replacement for the mitral valve wherever the anatomy allows, because a repaired valve avoids lifelong anticoagulation.
The main cost variable is the valve itself. A mechanical valve is durable but requires lifelong warfarin with INR monitoring. A tissue valve avoids warfarin but typically needs replacing after 10 to 15 years. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) avoids open surgery for high-risk and elderly patients, and sits at the top of the price range because of the device cost.
