What the procedure involves
Surgery for colon and rectal cancer removes the tumour-bearing segment of bowel along with its lymphatic drainage, most often laparoscopically or robotically to shorten recovery. Rectal cancer surgery is more technically demanding than colon cancer surgery because of the confined pelvic space, and may require a temporary or, less often, permanent stoma depending on how close the tumour sits to the anal sphincter.
