What Treatment in India Really Costs for Nigerian Patients

Hospital package quotes are only part of the total cost of treatment in India. This guide walks through every line item a Nigerian patient should budget for.

Why the headline price is not the whole picture

When a hospital in India quotes a price for knee replacement, cardiac surgery or a cancer treatment plan, that figure usually covers the surgical package itself: the surgeon's fee, the operating theatre, a defined number of ward or ICU days, standard implants or medicines, and routine investigations during admission. It rarely covers everything a patient traveling from Nigeria will actually spend during the trip.

Understanding this distinction early prevents an unpleasant surprise mid-treatment. Families who plan only around the hospital estimate often find themselves short on cash for accommodation, food, local transport and the unavoidable extra tests that come up once a doctor examines the patient in person rather than reviewing reports remotely.

The main cost components to budget for

  • International airfare for the patient and, in most cases, one attendant
  • Indian medical visa fees and any visa extension charges if the stay runs longer than planned
  • Accommodation for the pre-operative and recovery period, whether in a guesthouse or hospital-arranged patient hostel
  • Daily food, local taxis between the hotel and hospital, and a local SIM card for communication
  • The hospital package itself, which varies by procedure, implant or device choice, and room category
  • Contingency for extended ICU stay, additional scans or unplanned complications, which no quotation can guarantee against

Currency and exchange rate exposure

Most Indian hospitals quote international patients in US dollars, while a Nigerian family's savings are typically held in naira. Naira depreciation against the dollar between the date of the estimate and the date funds are actually transferred can materially change the amount needed, so it is worth converting the full estimated budget to naira with a buffer rather than only the headline procedure cost.

It is also worth asking the hospital's international patient desk whether the quoted package price is fixed in dollars for a defined validity period, since some estimates are only held for thirty to sixty days before being revised.

How room category changes the total bill

Hospitals typically offer several room categories, from shared wards to single private rooms and suites, and the daily room rate is one of the larger variables in a package. Choosing a general ward instead of a private room can meaningfully reduce the total cost of a multi-day admission, though most patients travelling long distances for surgery prefer the added privacy and space of a private room for recovery.

Getting a written, itemised estimate before you travel

A responsible facilitator or hospital international desk will send a written estimate that separately lists the surgical package, expected additional costs, and what circumstances would change the price, such as a longer ICU stay or an upgraded implant. Verbal estimates given over a phone call are not a substitute for this written document, and any hospital reluctant to put a cost breakdown in writing should be treated with caution.

  • Ask for the estimate broken down by surgical fee, hospital stay, and consumables
  • Ask what would trigger a revised quote, and by how much it typically changes
  • Confirm whether the quote is valid in dollars or subject to exchange rate adjustment
  • Confirm what happens financially if the recommended treatment changes after you arrive

A realistic total budget range

For a straightforward orthopaedic or cardiac procedure with an eighteen-to-three-week stay, most Nigerian families should budget for the hospital package plus an additional fifteen to twenty-five percent to cover travel, accommodation, food and a reasonable contingency. Complex cancer or transplant care, which involves longer stays and multiple treatment phases, needs a stage-by-stage budget rather than a single lump figure agreed before diagnosis is complete.

None of this replaces a conversation with the treating hospital's finance and international patient teams, who can confirm current package pricing for your specific diagnosis and chosen hospital before you commit to travel.
