What the procedure involves
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy removes about 80 percent of the stomach, reducing capacity and appetite-driving hormones. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small pouch and reroutes the small intestine, giving greater weight loss and better diabetes remission but with more nutritional consequences. Both are keyhole operations with a two to three day stay.
Eligibility matters. The accepted thresholds are a BMI above 40, or above 35 with an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or severe joint disease. Metabolic surgery for diabetes may be considered at a lower BMI under defined criteria. Surgeons who operate outside these thresholds on request are not practising responsibly, and we do not work with them.
